Natur-elle designs and produces baby, kids & lifestyle products made of organic fabrics. Our products exist of minimal 95% of certified (GOTS) organic cotton. The ribbons, sewing yarn, etc. are not always organic but represent only a few percentage of the whole product. That is why we in all fairness are speaking of 95%.
What is organic cotton?
Cotton is a wonderful wearable natural fiber. Clear white cotton is being considered pre-eminently as a natural product, but in fact it is more environment unfriendly than most synthetic fabrics. After coffee, cotton is the plant for which most pesticides are being used. Cotton growth is about 2,4 percent of all cultivated land, but uses 25 percent of all pesticides and 10 percent of all weed-killers.
Furthermore chlorine is being used for bleeching and formaldehyde for the production. It takes roughly one-third of a pound of chemicals (pesticides and fertilizers) to grow enough cotton for just one T-shirt.
According as longer and more pesticides are being used, insects become resistent and are even more and more poisonous pesticides needed. Earth pollution and erosion are the effects of frequent use of chemicals and fertilizers. It can even be that worse that land becomes unsuitable for agriculture.
Organic cotton is grown using methods and materials that have a low impact on the environment. "Working with, not against," nature is the principle behind organic farming. Grown without pesticides and spun without chemicals, organic farmers rely on organic fertilizers, manual crop rotation and integrated pest management. Fields are naturally fertilized, pest-eating insects are used to naturally control crop damage, and weeds are removed with hoes and tractors, as well as manually.
Third-party certification organizations verify that organic producers use only methods and materials allowed in organic production. Farms earn the organic label by using soil that has been free of synthetic pesticides for at least three consecutive years.
The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) has been developed for producing 'clean' fabrics and clothing with organic cotton and other organic grown fibers. This worldwide standard provides in the use of environmentally friendly chemicals, and water treatment at the fabrics. Clothing and fabrics with this certificate have to exist of minimal 70 procent of organic fibers.
- Better for the environment.
By using organic cotton we contribute to a better environment. The life of birds and wild animals and fragile eco systems are being protected. Useful insects are being safed instead of being killed by pesticides. Drinkwater stays clean of dangerous materials. In short, with organic cotton you will strongly contribute to a better living climate for people, animal and plant.
- Better for babies, kids and workers in the cotton industry.
Organic cotton is pure, natural and more breathable for delicate skin. Pesticide and chemically-treated clothing, diapers and bedding block the natural balance of the skin by trapping heat and preventing it from "breathing," (i.e. absorbing adequate moisture), often causing rashes and eczema on sensitive babies' skin. Grown and processed without toxic chemicals, organic cotton is free from synthetic poisons that could be absorbed into the bloodstream by contact with the user's skin.
